I AM AMERICAN – I AM CAMBODIAN
Cambodian American high school students explore their cultural roots, bicultural identity, and the story of the Khmer Rouge genocide. Through self-reflections and interviews, they search to understand their history and their unique Cambodian American journey.
This film was created in the of summer and fall of 2006 and is the first film project completed by the Southeast Asian Young Men’s Group. The students used hand-held video cameras and video editing software purchased with a small grant from the King County Soar project. This film was first screened at Central Youth and Family Services, and since then it has been screened at the University of Washington Ethnic Cultural Center, Khmer New Year’s event at the Seattle Center, Seattle University, Highline and Edmunds Community College, and at many high schools and community centers. We continue to watch this film during our in-school Southeast Asian Young Men’s Groups and screen it at community events.
