ACROSS THE MEKONG
Across the Mekong shares the experiences of five young men – three Lao, one Mien, and one Khmu/Thai – each of them a child of refugee parents from Laos. The film interweaves video dairies, oral history interview, and historical perspectives to tell the story of the Laotian refugee experience juxtaposed against the challenges and triumphs of their American children. This project was filmed over a seven year period – from 2008 to 2015. The film was completed and screened at the Southeast Asian Young Men’s Group’s annual cultural celebration in April of 2015. The young men in the film presented their project before a packed house and discussed their experience with filmmaking and their personal growth during the process. This project would not have been possible without the generous support of the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods and Comcast.
