STARTING TO GET SOBER
This documentary short by the Southeast Asian Young Men’s Group follows the story of Deno, a 19-year-old Mien American young man, as he decides to quit his daily drinking. He records a video diary of his efforts and the challenges along the way.
This project was filmed in 2007 and 2008 and originally screened at a cultural celebration event at Asian Counseling and Referral Service in 2009. However, in 2013, the Southeast Asian Young Men’s Group decided to work on a new edit of the project, including an updated interview with Deno and some of the youth in the project. Deno presented his film at our 2014 annual event, “Celebrating Our Heritage,” and discussed the process of making the movie and how this influenced and supported his recovery. Since that time, the SEA-YM participants have screened the film in our groups and at the King County Recovery Conference at Seattle Central College.
