2020 Census outreach, voter engagement training seminar on June 8

Want to help ensure Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders and other people of color in your community are counted in the upcoming 2020 Census? Want to organize, energize, and mobilize people for the upcoming elections? Join Asian Counseling and Referral Service (ACRS) on Saturday, June 8, 2019, for the Norman Y. Mineta Leadership Institute, a training seminar on the 2020 elections and Census.

ACRS and the Asian Pacific Islander Coalition of WA are excited to partner with APIAVote for this free national training program designed to empower Asian American and Pacific Islanders on the local level. Created in collaboration with local partner organizations, the curriculum will cover best practices and training exercises to mobilize for the presidential election and ensure an accurate count in the 2020 Census. The training will be split into two sessions. Individuals may sign up for the morning, afternoon, or both modules.

The morning track will help organizers brush-up on voter registration, volunteer recruitment, and tactics on mobilizing and getting out the AAPI vote. For the afternoon, we hope to recruit over 100+ community leaders and volunteers and cover messaging and mobilization around the 2020 Census. Sessions include:
• Introduction to the census and lessons learned from 2010
• Become an expert and learn how to answer frequently asked questions and scenarios faced by our community
• How to effectively recruit volunteers and train future leaders
• How to talk about the census and its impact
• Breakouts to share best practices and strategies for ethnic-specific working groups as we develop a regional outreach plan

Doors will open at 9:30 a.m. for participants to get light breakfast items, then the morning training will begin at 10 a.m. The morning session from 10 a.m. to noon will focus on upcoming elections, while 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. will focus solely on 2020 Census.

Please note that it is absolutely fine to only come for the afternoon session on 2020 Census.

NOTE: This event is intended for Asian American and Pacific Islander community members, but most content will be relevant for other communities of color.

The venue is wheelchair accessible. Participants can park in the main lot. There are also all gender restrooms available, and we will do our best to accommodate interpretation requests.

Organizations are free to send more than one representative, and individuals with no organizational affiliation are welcome to attend.

We want to make this accessible to as many participants as possible, so please let us know if members from your organization are traveling a long distance to participate and may need help with travel/accommodation stipends. Light breakfast and lunch will be provided, and there is no cost to attend.
